British Steel Corporation (BSC) was a government-owned corporation established by the Iron and Steel Act of March 22, 1967 incorporating the ownership of 14 major steel companies in the United Kingdom: Colvilles Limited; Consett Iron Company Limited; Dorman, Long & Co., Limited; English Steel Corporation Limited; G.K.N. Steel Company Limited; John Summers & Sons Limited; The Lancashire Steel Corporation Limited; The Park Gate Iron and Steel Company, Limited; Richard Thomas & Baldwins Limited; Round Oak Steel Works Limited; South Durham Steel and Iron Company Limited; The Steel Company of Wales Limited; Stewarts and Lloyds, Limited; and The United Steel Companies Limited. The organisation was converted to a limited company, British Steel PLC, and privatised in 1988. It later merged and is now owned by Corus, a Tata Steel company.
Chillingworth, John Biography Biography
John Chillingworth was born in London on 18th January 1928 and served as an Army photographer during the Second World War. He worked for 'Picture Post’ from 1949-1956, producing over 400 photo-essays for the magazine. The Getty Images' Hulton Archive holds four hundred picture essays from his days with Picture Post, which used narrative photography to inform, entertain and influence the conscience of its readers. After 1956, Chillingworth concentrated on journalism and continued to take photographs on a freelance basis. He ran his own management consultancy from the 1970s. He was an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and passed away on 6th April 2025, aged 97 years.

Scope and Content
Photographs which were considered for use in a 1959 issue of INGOT magazine but were not published. Comprising of: Three 11.3 x 9.5 inch, black and white prints stamped 'Photographs by John Chillingworth' showing close ups of machinery and sparks (references 217/10/9, 217/11/9 and 217/11/2) One 11.5 x 8.3 inch, black and white print stamped 'Photographs by John Chillingworth' of a worker using a long instrument to examine molten material (reference 217/6/14) One 11.5 x 7.7 inch, black and white print stamped 'Photographs by John Chillingworth' of a worker smoking a pipe whilst operating machinery (reference 217/5/8) One 11.3 x 6.5 inch, black and white print of three workers supervising the pouring of molten liquid from a large container (reference 217/9/11). This print is stamped 'Photographs by John Chillingworth' and also ‘Copyright of British Streel’. It has another stamp saying ‘British Steel plc Records Centre Irthingborough Location No. 1562 852c1B2.’ It also has ‘MS Mar 1959’ written on in pen One 11.5 x 5.7 inch, black and white print stamped 'Photographs by John Chillingworth' showing a worker silhouetted behind smoke and molten material (reference 217/5/13) One 9.8 x 9.8 inch, black and white print of two workers at open hearths (reference 217/5/32). This print is stamped 'Photographs by John Chillingworth' and also ‘Copyright of British Streel’. It has another stamp saying ‘British Steel plc Records Centre Irthingborough Location No. 1562 852c1B2.’ It also has ‘MS Mar 1959’ written on in pen and INGOT file March 1959 in pencil One 8 x 6.7 inch, black and white print with added white border showing a worker walking with a shovel with machinery and sparks behind. Two men are in the background standing with shovels. This print is stamped ‘Copyright of British Streel’ and ‘British Steel plc Records Centre Irthingborough Location No. 1562 852c1B2.’ It also has ‘MS Mar 1959 written on in pen’ One 11.5 x 5 inch, black and white print showing two workers stood behind a large container giving off sparks which is filling smaller containers with molten material. Stamped 'Photographs by John Chillingworth' (reference number 217/9/9)
