Born in 1899 in Harpurhey, Manchester. The family later, date unknown, moved to Northampton where he attended Northampton Grammar School. During his time at the school he joined the School Cadet Unit until he left school in 1915. After leaving school he joined the Royal Flying Corps, sometime either in late 1917 or early 1918 where he trained to be a Pilot.
