The Liverpool Road Station Society was founded with the objective of encouraging and promoting public interest in the preservation and restoration of Liverpool Road Railway Station, together with its outbuildings, in the City of Manchester, as a place of historical interest.
As well as wanting to preserve the site, the Society set about making plans to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the inauguration of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, which was marked in September 1980. To fulfil this, the society's activities focused on increasing awareness of the history of the site, and fundraising for its refurbishment.
The Liverpool Road Station Society formally wound down and transferred its assets to the Friends of the Greater Manchester Museum of Science and Industry in 1983, when the station itself became part of the museum site.
Scope and Content
File of correspondence including letters to members and other individuals and organisations, originally labelled "Outside Letters". Subjects covered include requests for images, historic objects, a document summarising the history of the Liverpool & Manchester Railway, work on the station site, and educational activities of the Society. The file includes letters from the Liverpool Road Station Society's secretary to members and patrons relating to the Society's closure as a separate body, to be absorbed by the Friends of the Museum of Science and Industry.

The Friends organisation grew out of the Liverpool Road Station Society which was established in 1978 by David Rhodes to save the station site. The Friends of the Greater Manchester Museum of Science and Industry had its inaugural public meeting in 29 July 1983, 2 months before the museum opened. It became a registered charity in 1985, and at the same time, the Liverpool Road Station Society formally wound down and transferred its assets to the Friends.
The Air and Space Museum merged with the Science and Industry Museum in 1985. The Friends organisations of the respective museums also merged.
