He taught on, and later directed, the Local History Diploma programme of the University of Manchester Extra Mural Department. He was also a founder member of the Manchester Industrial Archaeology Society. Ashmore published three books on the region, a further book entitled 'The Development of Power in Britain' and a number of monographs. Much of the collection consists of 'brought-in' prints which Owen sourced from businesses, collecting institutions, or that were given to him by colleagues.
