Chillingworth, John Biography Biography
John Chillingworth was born in London on 18th January 1928 and served as an Army photographer during the Second World War. He worked for 'Picture Post’ from 1949-1956, producing over 400 photo-essays for the magazine. The Getty Images' Hulton Archive holds four hundred picture essays from his days with Picture Post, which used narrative photography to inform, entertain and influence the conscience of its readers. After 1956, Chillingworth concentrated on journalism and continued to take photographs on a freelance basis. He ran his own management consultancy from the 1970s. He was an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and passed away on 6th April 2025, aged 97 years.

Scope and Content
One 11.5 x 9 inch, black and white print stamped ‘A John Chillingworth Original’ with reference ‘10 Mar 1957/3/5A.’ The image shows two workers seated next to a shower of sparks coming from the Bessemer at Ebbw Vale Works, Wales. It was taken for consideration of appearing in the picture story “Men at Work: The Bessemer Platform,” June 1958 issue, pp. 30-33, but was not published. The print has a yellow job sticker on the reverse with the following details: Job: INGOT mag, Date out: 14.3.58, Screen: 120, Height and width: S/S. White lines have been added to the image to show where to crop for publication. The reverse side contains a ‘Copyright of the British Steel plc’ stamp and a stamp for the British Steel plc records centre Irthlingborough with location number given as ‘1562 852c1b1.’
