Shirley Institute Biography Biography
The Shirley Institute was established in 1920 as the British Cotton Industry Research Association as a research centre dedicated to cotton production technologies. The Institute invented Ventile and developed the tog measure of thermal resistance. In 1961 the association merged with the British Rayon Research Association to form the Cotton, Silk and Man-Made Fibres Research Association. In 1989 it merged with the Wool Industries Research Association to form the British Textile Technology Group.

Scope and Content
Volume 2, issue number 5 and issue number 19 of the journal produced by the British Cotton Industry Research Association (later the Shirley Institute). Issue 5 is a paper entitled 'Two Simple Methods for Measuring the Mean Staple Length of Cotton: Description of Apparatus' by G.A.R. Foster. Issue 19 is comprised of a paper entitled 'Two Simple Methods for Measuring the Mean Staple Length of Cotton', with the author's name given as George Alfred Rea Foster. Both issues are stamped as being received in October 1927 by A.B. & Co. Ltd.
