The Wharton Crane and Hoist Company Ltd was established in Stockport in 1906 for the manufacture of cranes and overhead hoists for commercial use. It was incorporated as a public limited company in 1919. By 1961, the company was listed as being manufacturers of electric and hand overhead travelling cranes, electric and hand chain blocks and rope hoists, industrial lifting platforms and automobile lifts. It employed 330 people.
