Plummer, John James Biography Biography
John James Plummer was a photographer who worked in processing and printing at Foulsham and Banfield Ltd. He started his career as an apprentice to a photographer, and later tried to set up his own studio under the name Plummer and Co in 1911, which was based in Forest Gate, East London. This studio was not a success, so he worked for Foulsham and Banfield Ltd doing largely printing, developing and processing work. He died in 1933.

Scope and Content
This collection contains 192 photographs taken at Foulsham and Banfield's photographic studio in the early 20th century. The photographs are of contemporary theatrical personalities and performers, and are a rich source for researchers of contemporary costume and theatre of the early 20th century. Personalities photographed include Gladys Cooper, Dorothy Ward, Ivor Novello, Edna Best, The Dolly Sisters and Heather Thatcher.

Archival history
The collection was acquired by the National Science and Media Museum in 1984. It was collected by John James Plummer, who worked in processing and printing at Foulsham and Banfield from 1911 onwards.
