  • Scope and Content
    The Charles P. Metcalfe collection contains documents, photographs, publications, correspondence and ephemera relating to the life and career of Charles Pulfrey Metcalfe (1883-1970), cinema exhibitor, in the north of England between 1914 and 1957. The archive contains company documentation for the Incorporated Association of Kinematograph Manufacturers Ltd. (1915), documents on the Byelaws of Yorks Cinema Trade Exchange Club and documentation from the Cinematograph Films Advisory Council. There are also Associated Exhibitors Film Co. Ltd. documents relating to the setting up of company in 1921 as well as Board of Trade documentation on the administration of the Cinematograph Films Act and relating to Charles Metcalfe’s appointment to the board. There are a number of event invitations, programmes and menus for functions including the Yorkshire Summer Assizes Dinner of the Lord Mayor of Leeds and the First Annual Dinner of Yorkshire Television Association. A significant part of this archive is comprised of newspaper and journal clippings and articles relating to the C. E. A., cinematography, film industry and also about Metcalfe’s family. There are also photographs of C.E.A. events and members, Charles Metcalfe, his office in Newcastle, his home, and other personal photographs. Correspondence in this archive ranges from personal correspondence to letters between Charles Metcalfe and companies like Rank, from the Artists Rifles Association, and for the C. E. A., including a telegram from Buckingham Palace.
