E. T. Heron, film producer and publisher, founded the "Optical Lantern and Kinematograph Journal" in 1904. This subsequently became "The Kinematograph Weekly", the major British film industry trade journal. It ran under different title variants and publishers to 1971. Heron was associated with many of the early film pioneers such as Thomas Edison, William Friese-Green, Louis Lumiere, George Eastman and Chalres Urban. As well as being a publisher, he was on the boards of a number of film production companies and went to Italy during the First World War for the British government in order to to organise the making of propaganda films.

Scope and Content
This archive contains manuscripts, photographs and correspondence relating to Edward Thomas Heron, film producer and publisher. Correspondence in this archive relates to E T Heron's time in Italy during the First World War. This includes correspondence concerning the development of propaganda films and between E. T. Heron and the Ministry of Information regarding his findings whilst staying at the Hotel Quirinal in Rome reporting on the Cinema Propaganda Campaign. There is also correspondence to the Secretary of State for India, January 1918, seeking a grant towards the cost of a film promoting Indian Silk. This archive also contains documentation such as a copy of the British Government Cinematograph Committee blank ‘Report of Exhibition’ form with a circular expressing aims of this organization, a report on the successful showing of a film “The Tanks at the Battle of Amore” in Omaha and a list of Swiss Cinemas with seating capacities. Personal items in the E. T. Heron Archive include a small card from Sandringham, Norfolk, notes in which E. T. Heron recalls seeing a demonstration of the first talking machine (circa 1881), and both autobiographical notes and notes about Heron late in life written by his children in 1949. There are also a number of photographs in the archive including portraits of E. T. Heron, a large, personally signed sepia photograph of Thomas Edison inscribed ‘To E.T.Heron’ and a page of photographs of E.T. Heron and his wife. There are also three partly filled photograph albums taken in 1920s.
