  • Scope and Content
This volume is described as follows by Babbage: 'Labelled MSS, in 4to (or quarto, that is quarter size), vellum binding, 9 inches wide, 12 inches long, probably before 1825. Used in Devonshire Street'. It has no volume number, but is described on the front end paper as 'No. 1 NUMBERED 12 SEP 1865', and labelled M.S.S on the spine. The index gives an indication of the types of subjects dealt with in this notebook, for example: algebraic operations and formulae; mechanical notation; logarithmic tables; multiplication in notations, as well as other subjects not related to the engines, such as diving: a form of windows for a diving boat and diving bell, magnets and magnetism, value of lives for insurance and barometer and clocks. There are also two loose inserts (S/1/10/1-S/1/10/2), possibly a list of tables relating to astronomy and a list of figures and algebraic equations.
