  • Scope and Content
An early notebook of the engineer John Urpeth Rastrick, an associate of the great inventor Richard Trevithick and an important figure of the Steam Revolution. The book covers his early employment at the famous Bridgnorth Ironworks of John Hazeldine, when such engines as Trevithick's 'Catch-Me-Who-Can' (1808), the world's first passenger locomotive, were built. The manuscript has a number of references to Trevithick. The manuscript shows both the solving of engineering problems, the interesting issue of the working out of costs, and has information on clients and projects (including the Hammersmith Waterworks and waterworks at Worcester). Beyond steam engines, the manuscript includes solutions to engineering problems for watermills. The volume appears to have started life as a mathematical workbook as it has, working back from the end, notes and diagrams on pure geometry over seven pages written in a neat hand suitable for school presentation. A pencil date is added to this dated 1803. This would suggest that Rastrick took lessons in mathematics while working in his first employment at the Ketley Ironworks in Shropshire.
