(1905-1986), Professor of concrete structures and technology, Imperial College, London Arthur Lempriere Lancey Baker was a Professor of Concrete Structures and Technology at Imperial College, London. He was born in 1905 and was educated in civil engineering at the University of Manchester, once graduated he worked on the Mersey Tunnel project. He then moved to Johannesburg as the chief designer for the Reinforcing Steel Company, where he designed many skyscrapers. When he returned to England he worked on reinforced buildings and other structures. During the Second World War he was seconded to assist Reginald Stradling at the DSIR Buildings Research Centre, where he designed a number of Mulberry harbours with shock absorbing fenders. Here, Baker was introduced to Pippard, who wrote to the Rector at Imperial College which lead him to his appointment.
