Vyle, Charles Clement Biography Biography
Charles Clement Vyle worked in the Engineering section in Post Office Telegraphs. He invented or helped to develop various items of telegraphic equipment. One of the most important of these was his polarised sounder which was more sensitive than conventional sounders and could therefore work over longer distances. He also invented (with E V Smart) a duplex telegraph system.

Scope and Content
This archive comprises Automatic Telephone Manufacturing Co. Ltd (ATM) catalogues, journals, photographs and off-prints. Many of Vyle's instruments were manufactured by ATM, and the catalogues are heavily notated by Vyle, drawing attention to devices which he either invented or had a heavy involvement in developing. One of the catalogues is interleaved with copies of correspondence between the company and Vyle that emphasise the importance of the latter’s work; Vyle compiled this in order that his family would know of the work he had done.
