The Electricity Council Biography Biography
In 1957, the government reorganised the electricity supply industry. The Electricity Act of that year replaced the Central Electricity Authority with two new statutory bodies: the Electricity Council and the Central Electricity Generating Board. The government's aim was to decentralise the industry. The Electricity Council brought together representatives of the Central Electricity Generating Board, the Area Boards and its own officers to formulate the general policy of the supply industry in England and Wales. The Council reported to the Secretary of State for Energy. Although the Electricity Council was the central umbrella authority of the industry, it did not have statutory powers. The Council was formally wound up by The Electricity Council (Dissolution) Order 2001.

Scope and Content
The collection consists of four publications and a bundle of documents written by, or referred to by, Leslie Cedric Parker in the course of his employment with the Electricity Council. They relate to the design of heating systems for the home, and the provision of electricity services by local Electricity Boards. The period covered by the collection was a time when new types of domestic electric heating were being explored by the Electricity Council, to offer home owners an affordable and convenient alternative to gas or coal fired heating systems.

Archival history
This collection was created by Leslie Cedric Parker in the course of his employment at the Electricity Council from 1945 to 1979. Mr Parker contributed to the two design manuals on Floor Warming & Domestic Systems and to a research document on Storage Heater Systems. Mr. Parker retained the documents on his retirement from the Electricity Council. They were donated to the museum in 2013 by a relative.
