- Scope and ContentThe collection consists of personal papers relating to the employment of three generations of the Whitelegg family at Linotype & Machinery, and includes a staff identity card, apprenticeship certificates, production notebooks, trade union membership cards and photographs showing various departments in the company. The photographs consist of official staff photographs, informal photographs of staff on outings, official photographs of staff at work and products, and informal photographs of staff at work.

- Archival historyThe donor worked at Linotype & Machinery from 1961-1988 as a chargehand in the Pattern Shop. He was the last employee in the department and was tasked with destroying the library of patterns when the department closed in 1988. The donor's father was a foreman in the Autoplate department, and was the youngest foreman on staff at the time. He started as an apprentice in the tool room. His brother was a foreman in the Pattern Shop. The donor's grandfather started working at Linotype & Machinery in 1898, when the new premises in Broadheath opened. He lived in one of the L&M provided houses in Pollen Road, alongside the works. Most of the photographs were collected together by the donor's uncle and father. The papers came from the donor's uncle and the donor.
