  • Archival history
The archive is on loan to the Science and Industry Museum from the descendants of Sir William Henry Perkin. The papers were collected together c.1956 by Peter Kirkpatrick, a descendent of Sir William Henry Perkin. It was previously held at ICI then Zeneca Specialities in Blackley, Manchester. It was transferred to the museum in 1998 by the custodians of the collection. The notebook in which Perkin recorded his discovery of mauveine is owned by the City of London School. The school loaned the notebook to ICI in 1988, while ICI held the Perkin collection on loan from Peter Kirkpatrick, and the notebook was subsequently transferred to the museum as part of that collection. In 2005, the City of London School re-established its ownership of the notebook, in agreement with the custodians of the Perkin Collection, and permitted the notebook to remain on loan to the museum as part of the collection.
