The Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) is a part of Canada's National Defence department and the country's armed forces. The RCAF grew out of the Canadian Aviation Corps, founded in 1914, which became known as the Canadian Air Force in 1918. It was granted its Royal title in 1924 by King George V. In 1968 the RCAF ceased to be an independent force when Canada's armed services merged.
The RCAF saw active service in the Second World War, contributing to the Battle of Britain in particular. The force also fought in the Korean War, various peace-keeping and NATO missions.
