The firm carried out audits for companies such as Boddingtons Brewery, and Richard Johnson & Nephew. They also administered probate for individuals and acted as a Trustee for private estates.

The archive contains records relating to the administration of the estate of Samuel Armitage which includes financial records relating to Sir Elkanah Armitage & Sons Ltd and Manchester Free Trade Hall Co. Ltd. It also contains records relating to Ashworth, Mosley & Co.'s work as company auditors, comprising 29 draft audit books for various companies operating in the Manchester area. These records include incomplete audit records for Boddingtons Brewery (1933-1950) and Richard Johnson & Nephew (1937-1956).

Samuel Armitage was the fourth son of Sir Elkanah Armitage, cotton manufacturer. As well as helping to run the family business of Sir Elkanah Armitage & Sons Ltd, Samuel was a great supporter of good causes. He was also Chairman of Directors of Manchester Free Trade Hall Co. Ltd.
