Ferranti Electronics Ltd Biography Biography
The origins of Ferranti Electronics Ltd can be traced back to 1930 with the formation of the Electronics Department, but the company had in fact been manufacturing electronic products from 1923. The department closed down in 1940 but re-opened in 1941 as an off-shoot of the Radio Department. It produced components including valves and later cathode-ray tubes. In 1984 the department was reformed as Ferranti Electronics Limited and was made up from the following; Integrated Circuits Group, Discrete Components Group and the Microwave Division. Ferranti Electronics had been responsible for the development, manufacturing and marketing of discrete components and integrated circuits, as well as being one of Europe’s leading producers of semi-conductors. In 1987, with the exception of the Microwave Division and the Ceramic Seals Department (which stayed with Ferranti), Ferranti Electronics Limited was sold to Plessy.

Archival history
The donor worked in Ferranti's Aircraft Equipment Department at Moston. He obtained the booklet and enclosed receiver with the intention of building his own radio. The Integrated Circuits Group at Ferranti Electronics Ltd carried out development work on silicon circuits, receivers and semi-conductors for military use. The One Chip Radio Receiver was intended for use in military aircraft.
