B & F Carter & Co Limited is an engineering firm established in Bolton in 1919. In 1961 the company was described as 'General engineers, manufacturing braiding, electric cable, wire rope making machinery, industrial counting instruments and power transmission equipment.' At this stage the company had 250 employees. B & F Carter became a public company in 1936. By December 1966 the business was part of the B.I.C.C. Group. It became a private limited company in 1992, and was given the Company number 02760511. The company ceased trading in 2002.

General catalogue (5th edition) for Carter machinery, in two parts, 1956-1957. The catalogues give the specification and dimensions for a variety of braiding machine types, illustrating the range of the company's products.

The collection is in a good condition.
Archival history
The donor was an employee of the company from 1956-1970 and from 1976-1992. He was one of four managers who bought the company out in 1992. The company continued to trade until 2002. The donor took the catalogues as a souvenir of the company and retained them at home until 2009. The donor believes that one of the braiding machines in the Science and Industry Museum collections is a B. & F. Carter braiding machine.
