Oates's (Cutlery & Tools) Ltd started in 1852 selling cutlery and tools until it closed in 1981. The business started at premises in Newton Heath, from where they made a small amount of cutlery. The company also had a retail shop situated at 69 Thomas Street in Manchester. In the 1965 edition of Kelly's Directory of Manchester, Salford and Stretford Oates' are described as cutlers, tool dealers and saw makers. Advertisements from the 1940s show that the company also repaired cutlery and offered knife-grinding services.
