Duckworth & Co Biography Biography
William Duckworth founded a manufacturing chemists company in Corporation Street, Manchester in 1885. Duckworth entered into partnership with Samuel Kirtlan. The original company name was Duckworth and Kirtlan. The partnership was dissolved in 1887 and the company continued as Duckworth & Co. The company moved to purpose built premises known as Old Trafford Essence Distillary on Chester Road in 1895 for the manufacture of concentrated soluble essences, essential oils and colours supplied to the aerated water trade (i.e. local 'pop' men). Duckworths were leaders in the field, supplying flavours and essences around the world and developing products tailored to specific markets. The ledgers, product labels and label printing blocks represent the trade and products of this company. Duckworth & Co was acquired by Cargill Flavor Systems (UK) Ltd in 2003. The company vacated the Chester Road premises in 2006.

Scope and Content
Business archive consisting of sales ledgers relating to the manufacture and distribution of Duckworth's Flavours, an envelope of sample product labels, archive boxes of legal papers relating to trademarks, and one rolled poster of 'vintage' images.

The archive is in a poor condition. The volumes have suffered considerable damage due to damp storage conditions and require conservation work.

Archival history
Maintained by the company from creation to the date at which the company moved from its purpose built Chester Road premises in 2006. The records suffered considerable damage due to damp storage conditions. Twenty-two of the volumes were too water damaged to be acquired. A selection of volumes had already been retained by members of the Duckworth family prior to the museum being contacted. A further selection was retained by the family at the point of transfer. Some more modern material relating to recipes was retained by Cargill Flavor Systems (UK) Ltd.

In 1939 Duckworth & Co of Manchester established a company to carry on its food flavourings business: Duckworth & Co (Essences) Limited. In 2006 the company was sold to the American agriculture and food business Cargill for £150 million. Cargill sold its flavours business to the Irish company Kerry Group in 2011. In 2012 the business was renamed Kerry Flavours UK Limited. Company Number 00358462.
