The Claviger Cycle Company was established by William Goulding (b.1840) in Manchester. Goulding was a baby linen manufacturer and childrens outfitter turned bicycle manufacturer. He took out several patents for bicycle parts before starting the company to manufacture ‘Claviger’ high-wheelers with lever drive in January 1887. The company had an initial capital of £15,000 in £10 shares. The business soon moved from its first home in Alexandra Park to larger premises at New Bridge Street, Manchester.
The ‘Claviger’ rear-driver safety bicycle with solid tyres and lever drive was also made from 1887. The ‘Belsize’ geared-up lever driven rational and safety bicycle followed in 1889.
In December 1889 the company name was changed to the Manchester Cycle Manufacturing Co. Ltd and capital was increased.
