    Two archival boxes of material relating to the life and work of Herbert W Garratt. Personal papers of Herbert W. Garratt including apprenticeship indenture, details of his time in the Merchant Navy, correspondence and photographs during travels abroad and work as a locomotive engineer in Lagos, photographs of locomotives, correspondence and accounts regarding negotiations with Beyer, Peacock concerning royalties, modern correspondence between Dr. Richard Hills and H. W. Garratt's daughter, and a report book for the Lagos Government Railway. The archive also includes an article on Garratt locomotives written by Dr. Richard Hills.

    The archive is in a fair to good condition. There is some damage to the spines of the volumes. Photographic material consists mainly of 3 inch by 5 inch photographic prints (original), black & white, photographic paper.
