    The sample book is labelled 'Design book Lot 4000-4405' and contains handwritten descriptions of customer orders with samples of associated fabric. The volume is older than the business 'W. Gordon & Co. Ltd', and is believed to have belonged to an unknown firm, possibly based at the same address at an earlier date. Companies mentioned in the volume include Peter Reid & Sons, Samuel Barlow & Co, John Liddall, Clayton Bridge Co and Deakins & Co Ltd. The delivery telegrams are stamped 'W. Gordon & Co. Ltd., Sackville House, 44 Sackville St., Manchester' and contain information about shipments to India. The file of telegrams also includes handwritten notes.

  • Physical description
    The condition of the items is fair to poor. The file is affected by surface dirt and a spilled substance (possibly paint). A few pages have tears at the foredge. The volume has a soft cover, which has been damaged by water and mould. The first page has significant damage and some losses. Later pages are in better condition, but are delicate. The corners of most pages are folded over on the bottom right corner.

  • Archival history
    The material was passed to the People's History Museum in January 2003 by one of the directors of Stephenson Bell Ltd., architects involved in the refurbishment of their Princess Street site. The architects were stripping out 42-44 Sackville Street, a Grade II listed building, when the documents were discovered. They asked staff at the People's History Museum to assist in finding a suitable place for them.
