Manchester Corporation Waterworks was the successor of the earlier Manchester and Salford Waterworks co., which was established in 1814. It later became the North West Water Authority. Between 1890 and 1925, the Waterworks built the pioneering Thirlmere Aqueduct to help supply the ever-growing industrial city of Manchester with clean water from the Lake District.

The book also contains Manchester Corporation Waterworks, Specification and Conditions of Contract for Bolts, Nuts and Washers for Hydraulic Pipes (c.1910), Copy from book of agreements relating to consent given to Water Dept. of Manchester Corporation to take a water main up Venice Street from The Sackerville Estate Company Manchester Limited (1912) and letter from Manchester City Council City Engineer and Surveyor's Department relating to Quay Street Sewer replacement (1988).

The book of plans came into the ownership of Cable &Wireless in the early 1980s when the hydraulic main systems in Manchester, Liverpool and London were bought by Mercury Communications (owned by C&W) for the installation of fibre optic cables without the need to dig up the streets. Mr. Murray Riggs of Cable & Wireless donated the volume to the museum in 2002.
