Enlisted in the 1/4th Loyal North Lancashire Regiment in February 1909 and discharged from the regiment, with the rank of Company Sergeant Major, on the 21st February 1916. He then went on to enlist with the Royal Flying Corps in May 1916 and served with the Corps as a Rigger until 1919.
During the Second World War he was a Lieutenant in the Home Guard.
