Hugon & Co Ltd manufactured ready shredded suet. A Frenchman, Gabriel Hugon, living in Manchester realised how time consuming the process of refining and making suet at home was. He sold his engraving business and set up a factory in Openshaw to produce ready shredded suet.
In 1963 the company was sold to Rank Hovis McDougall and the production of suet moved from Openshaw to Hartlepool in 1974.
