J A & R A Hamwee were textile manufacturers and exporters based in Manchester. The company is known to have been active between 1876 and 1936. The Hamwee family were from Aleppo in Syria. Abraham Hamwee established the company in 1876. Abraham settled in Cheetham Hill, Manchester and his wife Reina, sons Joseph and Raphael, and daughter Esther joined him from Syria. The family exported Manchester cotton to a network of relations and friends in Syria, Egypt and Lebanon into the 20th century.
