  • Scope and Content
The Ferranti company archive covers the period 1882 to 1993, when the company ceased trading. The archive includes company records, technical records, trade literature and a large photographic collection. The collection consists of the records of the Board of Directors, the Finance and Control department and Strategic Services, as well as records of manufacturing divisions and subsidiaries, including Ferranti Defence Systems Ltd, Ferranti Industrial Electronics Ltd, Ferranti Computer Systems Ltd, Ferranti Electronics Ltd, Ferranti Instrumentation Ltd, the Transformer Department, Power Division and Ferranti Engineering, the Domestic Appliances Department, and Ferranti - Packard Ltd (Canada). There are some records relating to the de Ferranti family, although the majority of the family papers form a separate collection. The collection also includes a series of documents which relate to the parent company but which do not fit into the classification scheme applied to the archive. These records include accident report books, bound articles concerning the company, articles written by Ferranti employees, records from the Ferranti Archive (formed 1960 and closed 1990) including the correspondence files of the various Ferranti archivists, and the records of Ferranti Helicopters Ltd.
