The papers include early sketches of the Garratt locomotive, publicity brochures and newspaper clippings relating to the Garratt locomotive, photographs, sketchbooks and correspondence, as well as papers, drawings and photographs relating to H. W. Garratt's employment as a locomotive superintendent in Argentina, Nigeria and Peru.

    A collection of personal papers retained by one of Garratt's daughters and loaned to Dr. Richard Hills during the writing of his book on Beyer, Peacock with D. Patrick. The collection was donated to the Museum by Mrs. Mumford, Garratt's daughter, in 1984.
