  • Scope and Content
Plate 10 of a series of aquatints of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, titled 'Moorish Arch, Looking from the Tunnel'. It was engraved by S. G. Hughes, after an image by Thomas Talbot Bury, and was published by R. Ackermann, London, 1831. The Liverpool and Manchester Railway Company cleverly built the ornate arch and towers in this print to hide stationary steam engines. Early locomotives were not strong enough to pull carriages up hills by themselves. The stationary engines pulled the trains up the slope with ropes.
