  • Scope and Content
This volume deals with subjects such as selecting apparatus; history of the Small Analytical Engine; history of the Great Analytical Engine; algebraic addition, counting apparatus, division, simplification of carriage, picking up sectors and mill counting apparatus. Babbage started a second section, beginning at the back of the volume, inverted, numbering these pages from one again. Subjects in this section include rules for mechanical notation, general rules for the machine, principles of the engine, drawing and construction rules, velocity, frame, barrels, multiplication, cards, philosophy, tools, operations and parts. The section starting from the front overlaps with this section. There is a loose insert (S/1/3/1) which appears to be a rough sketch of machine parts. Two dates are recorded on the inside front page, namely 26 October 1837 and 'Begun 9 February 1837'. There is an explanation about the titles of the notebooks 'Sketch Book Volume III. Previously called Scribbling Book. These books were called 'Scribbling Books' in the notations, drawings, etc. etc. up to 26 October 1837 after which they were called Sketch Books.'
