    The index lists the types of subjects in this notebook and includes - principles; work to be done; things wanted; lathe, slide rest; tool holder for wooden tools; addresses of the following workmen and tradesmen: iron foundries, pattern maker, engraver of figures, smith, collier, dividing of scales, lathe maker; rough sketches and notes. The date of this note books indicates it most probably was not be the first chronological scribbling book. However, as this volume is numbered 1 on the cover, as well as Vol I by H.P. Babbage, the decision has been made to retain the latter's numbering system. The volume also includes five loose sheets (S/1/1/1 - S/1/1/5) that include sketches of tools, rough notes including grinding and lists of measurements, questions and observations about operations and rough notes of tools, showing a section of a cross slide with dimensions, thread taps - measurements, working diameter, bottom of thread, to make the dies.
