(1911 - 1988) Machine Room Supervisor Vivienne Evelyn Tappin, born Vivian Evelyn Tappin, was a machine room supervisor in the Royal Engineers Record and Pay Office based in Brighton. She initially worked as a punch and verifier operator but was later promoted to the Machine Room before becoming the supervisor. When new equipment was introduced into the office it was her responsibility to learn the new system and would often attend courses on this subject.

Scope and Content
The papers of Vivienne Tappin relating to her work as a machine room supervisor in the Royal Engineers Record and Pay Office. This includes a programming book from De La Rue Bull relating to courses she attended as part of training received on various pieces of computer equipment. Beyond this there are photographs showing Vivienne and other members of the office staff, and material relating to her membership of the Civil Service Sanatorium Society.

De La Rue BullBiography Biography
De La Rue Bull was formed as part of an agreement in 1959 between the De La Rue Company and Compagnie des Machines Bull which set up a joint company to sell, and manufacture, business machinery and electronic computers. Known as De La Rue Bull Machines Ltd it was jointly owned by the two companies and would allow the French company to expand into the Commonwealth. In 1964 General Electric would purchase Bull, which became Bull-General Electric, and the joint company began to sell GE computers. This did not prove to be successful though as in 1966 the company made a £600,000 loss and De La Rue sold half its share to General Electric. The company would late become General Electric Information Services.
