The Belgian State Railways was the original state-owned railway of Belgium, established in 1834. The first line, between Brussels and Mechelen opened on 1835 and was the first steam powered public railway in continental Europe. Its assets and operations were transferred to the newly created National Railway Company of Belgium in September 1926.
