The booklets were given to the donor during his employment at ICI Ltd in Trafford Park and were retained by him after he left the company. The donor joined the Analytical Dept. laboratories of the Dyestuffs Division in Trafford Park in 1964 from school. He was trained in analytical techniques and performed routine analysis of raw materials, intermediates and products associated with the Works. He progressed to the Works Research and Development where the job involved working for senior chemists in the development of new products, primarily reactive dyes. As part of his career development, he spent four years (1970-74) in a similar role in the laboratories at Blackley Works. On return to Trafford Park, he was offered the position of Plant Chemist, responsible for the technical control of the products made in one of the manufacturing plants. In 1983 the Trafford Park site was closed and the donor was redeployed to the Company's Ellesmere Port Works from where he retired in the late 1990s.
