Johnson, William Beckett, Timperley engineer Johnson was the manager of St. George's Iron Foundry (Richard Ormerod and Sons), Manchester. He was a prolific patentee with patents for example in improvements in the construction of locomotive engines (1847), improvements in steam boilers and safety valves (1855), improvements in raising and lowering trucks, carriages, engines, and other such railway appendages (1858) and others. Johnson died in 1902.

William Johnson's Imperial Cyclopedia of Machinery, London, c1852. Frontispiece reads: The Imperial Cyclopaedia of Machinery being a series of plans, sections and elevations of stationary, marine and locomotive engines, spinning machinery, grinding mills, tools, etc. All of the newest and most approved construction and many of them only recently patented including several of the most useful and important machines from the Great Exhibition. With descriptive letterpress, an essay on the steam engine and a history of the railways of Great Britain.
