Railway company enabled in 1847 as the South Yorkshire Doncaster and Goole Railway Company. The first section opened on 10 November 1849, running between Swinton and Doncaster, with the remainder opening in the early 1850s. The South Yorkshire Railway was absorbed by the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway in 1864.
