    This collection comprises mainly photographic material consisting of black and white and colour photographs, post cards and slides. The series of black and white photographic prints (c 1970) depicts windmills in Belgium, England, France, West Germany, the Netherlands and Portugal (prints are in colour). The series of, mostly, coloured post cards, depicts windmills in Belgium, England, France, West Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, Mallorca and the Golden Gate Park, [San Francisco], North Windmill. A series of 5 booklets and articles (? 1962- ? 1972) describes and illustrates Dutch windmills and includes an article by Geoffrey Abbott about windmills that was published in the Forces’ magazine. A manuscript notebook, 1973-1974, indexed alphabetically, contains notes about windmills that Abbott visited whilst in the Netherlands. 35mm colour slides taken in the late 1960s and early 1970s illustrate windmills in Belgium, France, West Germany.

    The archive was presented by Mr Geoffrey Abbott to the Newcomen Society in March 1988. The Society deposited the collection with the Science Museum Library and Archives in October 1990.

    The collection has been arranged in five numerical series according to format, namely photographs; post cards; booklets; book of survey notes and 35mm slides. Each series has been subdivided according to country and then by place.
