- Scope and ContentThe notebooks and loose sheets contain sketches drawn by Mr. E.T. Lane, when a pupil in the Great Western Railway works at Swindon in 1848-1849. They illustrate many of the locomotives then running on the Great Western Railway, including the ‘North Star’ of 1837, as well as engines belonging to other railways.

- Physical descriptionFair condition, smaller notebooks (1923-436) appear quite worn. The larger volume (1936-54) has been covered in brown paper and has some loose pages.

- Archival historyThe two notebooks and loose sheets (1923-436) were purchased by the Science Museum, London in 1923 from a private donor. Following this the Science Museum received another volume of drawings by Lane (1923-436). Following this the Science Museum was in correspondence with another private donor who was a descendent of Lane. A further volume of drawings also by Lane (1923-436) was loaned to and then bought by the Science Museum in 1936.
