John H. Hammond was a writer and historian on Camera Obscura and Camera Lucida. His book “The Camera Obscura: A Chronicle” was published in 1981. He presented much of his background research material for this book to the Science Museum in October 1981. In August 1983 and November 1987 he further presented research material on the Camera Lucida to the Museum, his second book “The Camera Lucida in Art and Science”, co-written with Jill Austin, published in 1987. Hammond died in 1995, bequeathing to the Science Museum further research on the camera obscura and camera lucida as well as material he had gathered for a third book “Mechanical Aids for Drawing”, which remained uncompleted at his time of death.

Scope and Content
This archive splits into various donations to the Science Museum made by Hammond during his life, and bequeathed to the Museum in his will. The contents of the archive relate to Hammond’s research, notes and drafts for his 2 books “The Camera Obscura: A Chronicle” (1981) and “The Camera Lucida in Art and Science” (1987) and a third book with remained unfinished at his time of death, “Mechanical Aids for Drawing”. The materials in this archive consist of photocopies of reading materials relevant to these areas, reading lists, images used for illustration, typescripts, notes, promotional materials such as adverts for Camera Obscura and Camera Lucida, and drafts of Hammond’s two published works.

This archive consists of various donations made both by Hammond over the course of his life and bequeathed to the museum upon his death. The Science Museum acquired this collection which was then later transferred to the National Media Museum.
