The Langworthy brothers were from a merchant Somerset family based in London. George Langworthy & Co. was established around 1822, and is listed in Pigot's trade directory for Cheshire, Cumbria, Lancashire and Derbyshire in 1828-29 as a manufacturer of and dealer in cotton goods and as a linen manufacturer, based at 3 Church Street, Manchester. George was joined by his brother Edward Ryley Langworthy in 1840, creating Langworthy Brothers & Co. Ltd. based in Salford at Greengate Mill on the banks of the River Irwell.
Edward retired from the company in 1870. Langworthy Brothers & Co. Ltd is listed in Kelly's (Slater's) Directory of Manchester Salford and Stretford in 1965, but does not appear in the 1969 edition.
Scope and Content
The collection contains numerous examples of documentation related to the textile trade between Manchester, South America and the West Indies. The documents contain daily communication between shippers in Liverpool and the company in Manchester and provides the following evidence; transport costs, prices for goods and commodities at various foreign ports, the well developed intelligence network of traders, financial transactions between producers and sellers.

Originally deposited with the museum in November 1996 for evaluation. Not formally transferred to the ownership of the museum. Attempts to contact the orignal depositor have drawn a blank.
