John A Wood Ltd Biography Biography
John A Wood Ltd was a textile manufacturer with registered offices at 82 Great Bridgewater Street, Manchester, and a factory at Mount Street Mills in the Harpurhey district of Manchester. The company used Jacquard looms to manufacture lace and an upholstery fabric called Moquette, used to cover seats on railway coaches, buses and trams. The company is known to have been in existence at the Great Bridgewater Street adress in 1868. By 1936, it was one of only three textile manufacturers making Moquette in the city, based at Mount Street Mills. The founder of the company, John A Wood, was born in Leeds around 1826, and appears on the 1861 Census as a coach lace manufacturer, living on Upper Brook Street, in the Chorlton upon Medlock area of Manchester. Reference to John A Wood, coach lace manufacturer of 30 Spring Gardens, Manchester, is made in the 1863 Slater's Trade Directory for Manchester and Salford.

Scope and Content
A collection of photographs showing male, female and child workers at various locations in the company premises, including workers operating Jacquard looms to produce lace and Moquette, workers in the packing room, female workers in the spinning room, male workers in the boiler room, and a group photograph outside the factory.

Archival history
The photographs were taken for John A Wood Ltd. They were then kept by William Edward Jervis, who worked at Mount Street Mills with his wife Alice and sister Elsie, as he and his family feature on some of the images. William Jervis was foreman at the mills. Jervis passed the archive on to his grandchild, who donated them to the museum in 2013.
