- Scope and ContentThe DVD comprises 9 folders of electronic files which relate to the early days of the Internet, and complement the physical archive. These are: 1. Getting Wired files, 1994 to 2003 Files for the hundreds of Getting Wired columns, written by Glyn Moody, that appeared every week in Computer Weekly from 1994 to 2003. As well as the final text, there are various background files with information about the Internet at that time. 2. Digital Code of Life – the history of the Internet and free software in genomics, 2002 to 2004 Files for Glyn Moody's book ‘Digital Code of Life: How Bioinformatics is Revolutionizing Science, Medicine, and Business’. It describes early use of the Internet and free software in the field of genomics, including its role in the Human Genome Project. 3. Documents with information and excerpts from early Internet sites, 1995 to 1998 Documents providing addresses and excerpts of very early Internet sites. They are a snapshot of the most interesting developments as they happened. Few of these sites exist today. 4. Greatest OS: Wired feature about Internet and free software, 1997 In 1997, Glyn Moody wrote an article for Wired magazine entitled ‘The Greatest OS that (N)ever Was’. It was the first description of Linux and the world of open source to be published in a mainstream title. At the heart of open source development methodology lies the Internet, and this article was the first to analyse it. The files contain all emails and notes for this feature, including an interview with Linus Torvalds at his Helsinki flat in 1996, the longest interview to be conducted with him until that time. 5. Internet with Windows book, 1995 Files for Glyn Moody's book 'Internet with Windows' – one of the first books to give detailed information about how to get on the Internet using Windows 3.1 and Windows 95. It describes a whole class of programs that disappeared many years ago, and gives insights into how people used the Internet in its early years. 6. Miscellaneous publications, 1993 to 2004 As well as the main Getting Wired column, Glynn Moody wrote articles about the early Internet for numerous other publications including New Scientist; these are compiled in this folder. 7. PC Windows book, 1992 Files for Glyn Moody's book 'PC Windows', written just before the Internet took off in 1993, and explaining the basics of PCs. 8. Rebel Code – the history of the Internet and free software, 1999 to 2001 Files for Glyn Moody's book ‘Rebel Code: Linux and the Open Source Revolution’. For the book, Glyn Moody interviewed many of the top free software and open source coders, including Linus Torvalds and Richard Stallman, creators what is now called GNU/Linux. The files contain full transcripts of 50 extensive interviews, as well as thousands of pages of ancillary information such as web pages, help files and directory listings, many of which relate to sites no longer in existence. 9. Reports and White Papers about the Internet, 1993 to 2002 Files for numerous reports and white papers that Glyn Moody wrote for companies. These include an analysis of the trends that appeared at the time, providing a perspective from those early years.
