Ordnance Survey dates back to 1747, when the defence ministry of the time, the Board of Ordnance, began a survey of England's southern coasts. Prior to this, maps had lacked the detail required for moving troops and planning campaigns.

Scope and Content
File (O.S.94) containing details for OS Mapping for 1:1250 series referenced using their TQ Sheet Number. Each folder surveyed a Kilometre square area of the reference point and contains detailed sketches and photographs of the reference points used to triangulate the area mapped.
