Jacob Dimoldenberg was born in 1892 in Salonique. His parents were probably Russians, it is likely that they moved to France because they were Jewish and were persecuted during the pogroms. He was brought up in Paris, in the Jewish quarter, Rue des Fosses in St Marcel. He got the French citizenship after fighting for two years in the Foreign Legion, from 1914 to 1916. He was enrolled for the period of the War but was wounded at the battle of the Somme. He undertook an apprenticeship in designs for prints at A Horr in Paris between 1907 and 1910. In 1911, he went to the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs in Paris and got a Silver Medal. Between 1913 and 1918 he worked for G George and Engel & Maisch in Paris. In 1919 he was married to a distant cousin who was living in Manchester. He then moved to the Jewish quarter of Manchester, in the Cheetham Road area. His first job was working for Pilkington & Knot designers and he later worked freelance for Tootal Broadhurst Lee. Jacob Dimoldenberg died on 7 December 1965.
